Tirana is the capital city of Albania. Founded as an Ottoman settlement in 1614, it was declared capital of Albania in 1920, when it had a population of around 10,000. Since the end of communist rule in Albania, the capital's population has grown from c.250,000 to a figure of 616,000. Tirana is located on the Ishem River, twenty miles from the sea and from the port city of Dürres.
