The Shahbag protests, also commonly known as the Shahbag movement were a series of protests in Dhaka throughout February 2013 demanding the death penalty of war criminal Abdul Quader Molla after he was convicted of five counts of war crimes but only sentenced to life in prison.[1] Many prominent Bangladeshi secularists against the Jamaat-e-Islami party and terrorist group were killed, most notably Ahmed Rajib Haider who was murdered by Ansarullah Bangla Team terrorists while the protests were happening.[2] During the protests, vigils were held for the victims of war crimes of the Bangladesh liberation war.[3] The goals of the Shahbag movement were to seek the death penalty for Abdul Quader Molla and label Jamaat as a terrorist group.[4]
