Four seats on the Pittsburgh School District Board of Directors were up for general election on November 3, 2015. A primary election was held on May 19, 2015. The board is made up of nine members that represent geographical regions within the district.

Incumbent Regina B. Holley won the District 2 seat without opposition. Lynda Wrenn and Moira B. Kaleida also won without opposition for the seats in Districts 4 and 6, respectively. Kevin L. Carter (D) defeated Rosemary Moriarty (R) for the District 8 seat.

Wrenn defeated Kirk B. Burkley in the primary election. Samuel J. Hurst and Tracy Link were defeated in the primary election for District 6. Patricia Rogers lost the primary election in District 8. No independent candidates filed to run in the general election.^[1][2]

The Pittsburgh School District is located in Allegheny County in western Pennsylvania. The county seat is the city of Pittsburgh. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county had a population of 1,231,527 in 2013.^[3] In the 2012-2013 school year, the Pittsburgh School District was the second-largest school district in Pennsylvania and served 26,292 students.^[4]

Demographics[edit]

Allegheny County outperformed the state in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. According to the United States Census Bureau, the percentage of residents over age 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher was 35.9 percent in Allegheny County compared to the state's overall percentage of 27.5 percent. The median household income in Allegheny County was $51,366 compared to Pennsylvania's statewide median of $52,548. The poverty rate of the county was 12.9 percent, and the state's poverty rate was 13.3 percent.^[3]

Voter and candidate information[edit]

The Pittsburgh Board of Directors consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. The members of the board are elected by voters in nine districts. The primary election for the Pittsburgh Board of Directors was held on May 19, 2015, and the general election was on November 3, 2015. Four seats were up for election on November 3, 2015.^[2]

School board candidates had to file for this election with Allegheny County by March 10, 2015. Those wishing to run as an independent candidate had until August 3, 2015, to file. To vote in the primary election, residents had to register by April 20, 2015, and to vote in the general election, residents had to register by October 5, 2015.^[6]

Endorsements[edit]

Holley, Wrenn, Kaleida and Carter received official endorsements from the Allegheny County Democratic Committee and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers.^[7][8]

Kaleida also received official endorsements from the Gertrude Stein Political Club of Greater Pittsburgh and the Steel City Stonewall Democrats.^[9]

Rogers received official endorsements from Pittsburgh City Councilman Dan Lavelle, state Rep. Jake Wheatley (D-19) and Gov. Tom Wolf.^[10]

Kaleida, Wrenn and Carter received official endorsements from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.^[11]
