Battery is a beating, wrongful physical violence or unwanted touching of another. The actual threat to use force is an assault; the use of it is a battery, which usually includes an assault. "Battery on a police officer is defined as intentionally making physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with an officer." ^[1]
