Styria (Slovenian Štajerska, Austrian Steiermark) is a historical region of Slovenia. It was formed when Great Carantania fell apart. In 1180 it became a duchy in the Habsburg empire. It was divided into Upper, Central and Lower Styria in the Middle Ages. In 1918, when Austria-Hungary fell apart, it was divided between Austria and Yugoslavia so that Austria got Upper and Central Styria and Yugoslavia got Lower Styria. Today, Styria is the name of both an Austrian and a Slovenian region.
