The canary is a yellow type of finch that is native to several archipelagoes in the Atlantic Ocean, notably the Azores and Canary Islands.

Traditionally, canaries have been used in mines to provide advance warning of the accumulation of poisonous gases.

The canary is named after the Islands. The Islands are so named for the dogs found on them when rediscovered in the fourteenth century. Latin canis = dog.
