Notes on the tables above:
According to Ballotpedia’s tracking, Trump endorsed 257 candidates who appeared on the November 8 ballot. This includes all regularly-scheduled general elections at all levels of government, Louisiana’s primaries, and the special U.S. Senate election in Oklahoma.
Trump’s endorsees won 216 of the 257 called races held on Nov. 8 (84%).
Forty of those called races were battleground congressional or gubernatorial elections, rated as either a toss-up or lean/tilt Democratic or Republican by The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, or Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
Trump’s endorsees won 16 of the 41 called battleground races (39%).
Trump’s lowest win rate was in gubernatorial races, where he endorsed 21 candidates. Of the 21 elections, ten of Trump’s endorsees won (48%).
The table below shows Trump’s total number of endorsements made and win rates by office level. The “Total” figures cover all candidates who appeared on Nov. 8 ballots and the “Battleground” figures cover the subset from that total number who ran in battleground elections.
The section below provides commentary on Trump's endorsements in the 2022 general election.
| “ | Party strategists said Trump's choice of political novices and others who embraced his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, proved unattractive to voters. [...] Republicans also complained that Trump did not aggressively back up his endorsements with money, despite his fundraising prowess.[3] | ” |
| —David Morgan, Gram Slattery, and Jason Lange, Reuters[4] | ||
| “ | No one turns out Trump’s voters quite like Trump—as long as he’s on the ballot. In 2016 and 2020, turnout was huge, particularly among the infrequent voters who make up a sizable portion of Trump’s base. In the midterm elections, however, these voters didn’t turn up as much—and Trump’s very presence motivated Democrats and independents to vote against his handpicked candidates in several tight races.[3] | ” |
| —Alex Shepard, The New Republic[5] | ||
| “ | Trump remains quite popular among Republican voters, and his endorsement was decisive in plenty of House primaries this summer. But close association with the twice-impeached president was a clear liability in competitive 2022 House races, turning what would have been a modest-but-solid Republican majority into (at best) a razor-thin one.[3] | ” |
| —Phillip Wallach, The Washington Post[6] | ||
| “ | Endorsements of general-election candidates are, ultimately, statements about which party should win an election. [...] If you believe in the cause of the party as a whole, you are more likely to back some losers in competitive races because those are the people most in need of a boost. So, it’s not really a black mark against Gabbard, or Nikki Haley, or Ron DeSantis, or Glenn Youngkin, or Trump that they supported people who lost competitive races in a year when Republicans lost competitive races.[3] | ” |
| —Dan McLaughlin, National Review[7] | ||
Of the primaries completed before September 15, 2022, 60 candidates (25%) Trump endorsed ran unopposed.[8]
Of the 176 contested primaries that took place before September 15, 2022, in which Trump endorsed (excluding five races in which candidates didn't make the ballot), 159 Trump endorsees won and 17 lost. The endorsement success rate in that group of races was 90%.
There were 17 primaries where Trump endorsed a challenger to a Republican incumbent, and six endorsed challengers defeated incumbents. All are listed in the table below.
The two primaries in which GOP incumbents ran against each other due to redistricting are not included here. In West Virginia's 2nd, Trump backed Rep. Alex Mooney (R) against Rep. David McKinley (R), and Mooney won. And in Illinois' 15th, Trump-endorsed Rep. Mary Miller (R) defeated Rep. Rodney Davis (R).
