World History Homework Four

1. One of my favorite Roman emperors is Vespasian because he broke out of the norm of having only patricians govern the people. He proved that a common man was as capable as a wealthy man to rule Rome.

2. The Roman Republic, formed in 509 B.C., consisted of: a 300-member Senate that proposed laws; these laws required the approval of the Assembly of Centuries, units of 100 male soldiers, and two consuls that ran the army and supervised religious functions. Formed in 27 B.C., the Roman Empire thrived for several hundred years, having more than 100 cities, a powerful army - in which the emperor had complete control over, useful sewers, and the systematic management of justice.

3. The biggest difference between the Western Roman Empire and the Bryzantine Empire is that the Bryzantine Empire had Constantine, a Christian as its conqueror and ruler.

Good, but note: "Byzantine", not "Bryzantine".

4. Even though Latin is now a dead language, parts of it have been incorporated into other languages today, showing what a powerful means of communication it really was and still is today.

5. From 27 B.C. to A.D. 180, the Roman Empire flourished during “Pax Romana.” Throughout this time, the Romans experienced peace, effective leadership, and great wealth.

6. Many things about the decline of the Roman empire reminds me of the United States today – we are a great nation but have corrupt leaders presiding over us, dishonest bankers who take money for themselves and lead the financial industry to near ruin, etc….

7. “All of world history, so far in this course, can be attributed either to God paving the way for Jesus, or the devil creating obstacles for Him.” While every detail cannot be examined, I believe that there are many examples where this statement is true. Polytheism, abortion, homosexuality, the list goes on. All of these ideas are meant to turn people away from God and to focus on their own needs and wants.

H3. Paul had a multitude of rights which his fellow disciples did not have – the right to vote in the Roman assemblies, the right to hold property and to make legal contracts, the right to have a lawful marriage with a Roman citizen, immunity from certain taxes, and the right to sue and be sued.

H4. To the plebeians, Julius Caesar was a god; he gave them food and allowed the Jews to practice their religion. To the patricians, Julius Caesar was a villain; he turned the people’s loyalty away from Pompey and defied the Senate’s orders.

H6. Attila the Hun, leader of the Huns from A.D. 434 to 453, was a brutal and barbaric fighter. Everyone was afraid of him; rumors started to spread that he was a cannibal and ate the raw meat right off dead animals. However, Attila was a superb horseman and could shoot an arrow accurately from atop a galloping horse.
