Proverbs 17

Proverbs 17 is a chapter in the Book of Proverbs that speaks to the folly of fools, and the value of wisdom. It also specifically warns against returning "evil for good."

For example, verses 12 and 13 state:[1]

“
Let a man meet a she-bear robbed of her cubs

rather than a fool in his folly.
If anyone returns evil for good,
evil will not depart from his house.

”

Proverbs 17 continues to explain the misfortune that greets those who turn away from God:[2]

“ Whoever loves transgression loves strife;

he who makes his door high seeks destruction.
A man of crooked heart does not discover good,
and one with a dishonest tongue falls into calamity.

”
