Peterlee

Peterlee is a new town in County Durham, north-east England, designated in 1948 under the New Towns Act 1946, and named after the Durham miners' leader Peter Lee (1864-1935). It is located close to the North Sea coast adjacent to the mining villages of Horden and Easington, and was intended to provide better-quality housing for coal miners. The original plans for Peterlee were drawn up by Berthold Lubetkin but their implementation was blocked by the National Coal Board and Lubetkin resigned in 1950. The artist Victor Passmore took over aesthetic design control in 1955. In the late 1960s T. Dan Smith was chairman of the Peterlee Development Corporation.
