The Soviet Union was the first country to legalize abortion ever. This happened in 1920 and the abortions were free of charge.
After the Second World War the number of abortions surpassed the number of born children many times over. On average every Soviet woman had several abortions, which was a much higher average than in non-communist nations.[1][2]
In China, abortions are legal and are encouraged after a couples child is born. This because of China's former one-child-only rule. Since 2013 Chinese parents are allowed to have two children. But still female babies are often aborted, because male children are preferred in China.
Cuba is, apart from Guyana, the only country in Latin America, that allows abortion.
Generally one can say, that in communist countries abortion was the most common method of birth control.[3]
