Matsuo Basho (Japanese: 松尾 芭蕉) (1644–1694) was a renowned Japanese poet of haiku. His best-known poem is the "frog haiku":

古池や

蛙飛びこむ
水の音

furu ike ya

kawazu tobikomu
mizu no oto

Into the ancient pond

A frog jumps
