Houston Dynamo

Houston Dynamo FC is a soccer team currently playing in MLS. The team formed after the demise of the San Jose Earthquakes, who have since reformed, making Houston an expansion team. They have the distinction of being the first (and only, so far) team to win two titles in their first two seasons (2006 and 2007), both over the New England Revolution.

Originally to be named "Houston 1836" (after the founding year of the city), the name was scrapped due to controversy within the Hispanic community (as 1836 is also the year Texas gained independence from Mexico). The name "Dynamo" was chosen as an alternate (it not only represents energy, which is a dominant part of Houston's economy, but was also the name of prior lower-level soccer clubs in the city, as well as the name of many successful Eastern European clubs such as Dynamo Moscow).
