Paraguayan Voting Abroad Referendum, 2011

A Voting Abroad Referendum was voted on in Paraguay on October 9, 2011. The referendum sought to allow citizens living abroad to vote in national elections. The amendment was introduced as a referendum in the hopes that it would increase participation in national elections. Government authorities estimated that at the time roughly 700,000 Paraguayans lived abroad, and approval of the amendment would allow expatriates to vote in national elections. The measure was approved.[1]

Support[edit]

The Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, believed that the vote was a step towards allowing more Paraguayans to participate in and strengthen the country's democracy, and Paraguayan expatriate groups also supported the measure.[3][4]
