Homework Four Answers - Student Thirteen

From Conservapedia

1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them.

The North liked tariffs because it protected their manufacturing companies against foreign competition, and the South disliked them because they had to pay more for equipment.

Good, but not quite complete. See model answers when available. (Minus 1)

2. Do you think States have the right to secede from (leave) the United States? Discuss, including a mention of "nullification doctrine."

No, since they were drafted into statehood, and the nullification doctrine applied to laws.

Good opinion, but the phrase "drafted into statehood" requires further explanation.

3. Who was the most politically conservative of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

James Monroe, as he was against more national power, and was an isolationist in foreign affairs.

"Isolationist" is a pejorative term that fails to fully describe the viewpoint, and the term is probably not one that Monroe would have used. Otherwise your answer is fine. (Minus 1)--Andy Schlafly 23:24, 6 March 2011 (EST)

4. Many say the War of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view, please?

Yes, as Britain gained no land and America gained nothing. Essentially, it accomplished nothing.

Good, but not entirely complete. See model answers. (Minus 1).

6. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain.

I like Marbury v. Madison most, since it gave the judicial branch more authority to check the legislative branch. I like Cherokee Nation v. Georgia the least, since they were depriving the Cherokee Nation basic rights guaranteed in the Constitution.

Excellent.

8. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840.

What surprises me is the fact that from 1776 to 1840 how much the nation had grown since 1776.

Good.
