Treaty Of Portsmouth

The Treaty of Portsmouth officially ended the Russo-Japanese War. The treaty was organized by Theodore Roosevelt and was signed in Portsmouth, Massachusetts on September 5, 1905. The treaty awarded Port Arthur and southern Sakhalin Island to Japan, recognized Korea as a Japanese sphere of influence, and established joint rule between Russia and Japan over Manchuria. Many Japanese were dissatisfied with the treaty, as it did not include an indemnity payment from Russia and left northern Sakhalin in Russian hands.^[1]

Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation efforts.
