Plains are an extensive area of level or rolling treeless country. They may contain tall grass or farms and in some cases even trees and dense shrubbery.
The United States Great Plains are critical to the economy not only of the United States, but of the world, since a large percentage of both human and animal grade food comes from the Great Plains.
The book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is set in part on the Great Plains during the great Dust Bowl.
