Jurisdiction[edit]

This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]

The NYC Criminal Court handles misdemeanors (crimes punishable by fine or imprisonment of up to one year) & lesser offenses. The Court also conducts arraignments and preliminary hearings for felonies (crimes punishable by imprisonment of more than one year). The Criminal Courts of the City of New York are located in all five boroughs.[2]

Selection method[edit]

Judges of the New York City Criminal Court are each appointed to 10-year terms by the mayor. They face reappointment at the end of each term. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and city resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[3]
