Humberside was a former county of England created in 1974 and dissolved in 1996; it incorporated territory taken from Lincolnshire south of the River Humber and Yorkshire north of the river. The county town was Beverley.
The new county was never able to attract the loyalty or affection of its inhabitants (who had strong ties to their respective former counties) and even the opening of the Humber Bridge in 1981 - the main link between the northern and southern parts of the county - failed to bind it closer together. In 1996 the county was abolished and its territory divided between the new unitary authorities of Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. The name Humberside, and its operational boundaries, are still used by organisations such as Humberside Police.
