The Alliance of Baptists is an organization of "progressive" Baptist churches.
The Alliance formed in 1987 when it broke away from the Southern Baptist Convention as a result of the SBC taking a more conservative stance on theology and social issues.
Although there is overlap (in terms of membership) between the Alliance and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (which itself broke away from the SBC in 1990), the Alliance is far more liberal than the CBF; it is allied with the ecumenical National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches whereas the CBF is not. Furthermore, the Alliance allows homosexuals to serve as pastors, missionaries, and in all capacities; the CBF does not (as of 2018, though there was a movement to allow open homosexuals to serve in some capacities within the CBF).
