A vote about whether to recall Hershal Deputy from his position as mayor of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado, took place on June 19, 2012.[1] Deputy was retained in his seat.[2]

Reasons for recall[edit]

Members of the recall committee included Megan Carlson, Susan Carlson, Lori Baumgardner and Summer Shuster. The recall petition accused Deputy of spending funds without the approval of the town board. Deputy was also accused of firing town employees without the board's approval. He was also accused of “making false accusations of criminal wrong-doing of a town citizen during a public meeting." Deputy defended his record, saying, "I've been really proud of what the town has accomplished, with the support of the citizens and the work of the board of trustees... Truly, I've taken the responsibility entrusted to me by this town extremely seriously. My only goal in all of this is to make Hot Sulphur Springs a better place.”[3]

Path to the ballot[edit]

24 signatures were required to force a recall election. On March 6, recall organizers turned in 102 signatures.[3] Deputy was retained in office in an election that took place on June 19, 2012.[2]
