Purple

Emperor Justinian depicted wearing Tyrian purple[1]

Purple is a non-primary color. It is made by combining blue and red.

Purple has been considered to be the color of royalty and bears several names, such as Tyrian purple, Imperial purple, royal purple, or Phoenician purple. The dye is extracted from sea snail shells known as Murex.[2] Some shades of Tyrian purple appear to be a darker reddish-hue, depending on the shells used as the source.[3]

In United States politics purple is used to denote a state or area which is evenly divided between Republican and Democrat voters ("purple state").
