The War of the Worlds is a novel by H.G. Wells that was first published in 1898. This roughly 60,000-word novel,^[1] which is divided into two parts ("books"), deals with a possible invasion of Earth by fictional Martians, who in the story are technologically more advanced than the humans. Rich in vocabulary and more exciting than books promoted by liberals, this novel is a superb choice for nearly anyone.

Written before mankind could fly, this novel is groundbreaking science fiction, perhaps the first and greatest of that genre.

Radio broadcast and panic[edit]

In 1938, Orson Welles produced a radio dramatization that sounds remarkably like an authentic newscast, causing a panic in many parts of the United States when listeners mistook the story for an actual news broadcast.

Adaptations[edit]

The book has been reworked many times. There have been modernizations, sequels by other authors, alternate tellings (including one where Superman fights the Martians), several films (including the 1953 original and two 2005 adaptations), a 1988 syndicated TV series based on the 1953 film, and even a musical.

A television show beginning in 2019, done in the style of the Walking Dead, was based on the novel.^[2]
