North Tyneside

North Tyneside is an administrative district of Tyne and Wear in north-east England, on the north bank of the River Tyne east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It includes the districts of Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The district was established in 1974 from a number of smaller authorities. It is one of the few authorities in England to be presided over by a directly-elected mayor.

The area was formerly noted for coal mining and shipbuilding. Mining ended in the late twentieth century, and the shipbuilding industry has been reduced to a small amount of ship repair and conversion work. The area of North Tyneside that faces the North Sea includes the small coastal resorts of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Tynemouth has, on the headland overlooking the river mouth, a combined medieval castle and priory, both in ruins.
