Tuber

A tuber is a short, thickened underground stem of some plants.^[1] During dormancy, the plant dies back to the tuber, which stores nutrients for the next growing season's growth. The best known tuber is the potato; also, many ornamental plants such as the caladium grow from tubers.

A similar structure, a tuberous root or root tuber, is formed from root rather than stem tissue. Examples of plants with tuberous roots are the sweet potato and the dahlia.
