George R. R. Martin, born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey, is a novelist and short story writer in the genres of fantasy, horror stories and science fiction. In addition, he is a screenwriter and television producer. Martin is best known for A Song of Ice and Fire which is his bestselling series of epic fantasy novels that HBO (Home Box Office) used a basis for its dramatic series Game of Thrones. The series is loosely based on the Wars of the Roses, a feud in 15th century England for the throne.

When asked about his religious views, Martin replied: "I suppose I'm a lapsed Catholic. You would consider me an atheist or agnostic. I find religion and spirituality fascinating. I would like to believe this isn't the end and there's something more, but I can't convince the rational part of me that makes any sense whatsoever."^[2]

Martin is obese (see: Atheism and obesity). In 2014, Martin became angry about some of his fans speculating about his health and the time of his future death. The fans were concerned that he would not finish his lengthy fantasy series before he dies.^[3] In response, on July 10, 2014, Martin published a picture in The Guardian which featured him giving those fans a profane gesture using his middle finger (see also: Atheism and profanity).^[4] He also did the same thing on a German news interview, where he also verbally stated "[Censored] you, to those people!" while claiming their concern about his health and possible death was offensive to him.^[5]
