Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) was the English author of The Alexandria Quartet (1957-1960).[1]
Durrell was born February 27, 1912 in northern India and was sent to be educated in Englan at age 11, but he later despised the conditions and called it "The English Death".[2] He moved to the island of Corfu, in Greece, though the left for Egypt during the Second World War with a press job.[3] He was highly influenced by Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer and James Joyce in writing The Alexandria Quartet, a set of four complex novels set in recent Alexandria.[4] These novels are all set during the life of a fictional character called L. G. Darley and act as a view of modern romance and the emotions surrounding descript sex in Alexandria.[5][6] Durrell died of a stroke on November 7, 1990.[3]
He was the oldest brother of the naturalist, zoologist and writer, Gerald Durrell.
