Ferdinand Ii

Ferdinand II (1578 - 1637) was the eldest son of archduke Karl and the Barvarian Princess Maria Ferdinand, and he was the grandson of Ferdinand II. Ferdinand was King of Bohemia from 1617 , King of Hungary from 1618, and eventually became the Holy Roman Emperor from 1619 when he succeeded his uncle Matthias. He studied under the Jesuits at Graz and at the University of Ingolstadt.

A zealous Catholic, Ferdinand provoked the Bohemian revolt that led to the Thirty Years' War in his attempts to remove Protestantism from his lands.^[1]
