Homework Ten Answers - Student Three

From Conservapedia

1. Pick a question that you missed on the midterm exam, and describe several different ways that you could have figured out the correct answer instead.

I couldn't find my midterm papers, so I'm not able to answer this question directly.. but there are some techniques I could have used in order to get a better grade on the exam. While taking the test, I'd forgotten to first rule out the obvious wrong answers. If I'd done that on some of the questions, my grade would have turned out to be much higher.

Another way I could have answered more questions correctly is thinking about the situation the question was referring to and remember what other events were going on during that time period. This could've really helped me out.

Excellent answer.

2. Who was the most influential person of the time period in this lecture? Explain.

In my opinion, the most influential man of this time period would have to be Theodore Roosevelt. He was possibly one of the most popular presidents ever. Some of his accomplishments included the construction of the Panama Canal, and the negotiation of the peace treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War. Also, he founded several national parks, and even had the teddy bear named after him.

Correct, although there have probably been a few more popular presidents, bur not many, so you're right that he was one of the most popular ones.

3. Pick any debate or discussion topic or issue in this lecture, and answer it.

[Debate: Was it discriminatory not to include girls and women in this draft?]

If something like that ever happened today, yes, I would say that it is extremely discriminatory. But back in the early 1900s, men did most of the physical work, and women either worked as teachers/office workers or stayed home. I suppose it would have made sense for men to be drafted at that time, but today things are very different.

OK.

4. Briefly explain Constitutional Amendments 16 through 19.

The 16th Amendment allows Congress to collect taxes on incomes.

The 17th Amendment shifted the choosing of Senators from the state legislatures to the people of the states.

The 18th Amendment eradicated the sale or manufacture of alcohol in the United States.

The 19th Amendment gives women the rights for voting.

Correct.

5. Explain the cartoon.

The cartoon shows Teddy Roosevelt pulling Russia and Japan together in order to end the Russo-Japanese war.

Right. The cartoonist was probably supportive of Teddy Roosevelt.
