Coat of Many Colors is a country song by Dolly Parton.
The song is based on a real life incident in Parton's life: growing up poor in rural east Tennessee, her mother made a patchwork coat out of old rags, telling Dolly the story of Joseph and his famous coat. Going to school, she was teased for the coat.
Dolly wrote the song on a dry cleaning receipt provided by her long-time singing partner Porter Wagoner; the receipt and a replica of the coat are on display at her Dollywood Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
