Bodhran

A Bodhran (pronounce Bow-ran) is a traditional Irish frame drum often called "the heartbeat of Celtic music". Bodhrans range from 10 to 24 inches in diameter and are several inches deep. The head is traditionally composed of goatskin tacked to one side of the frame, which is often painted in elaborate Celtic designs. Many Bodhrans also have one or two crossbars attached to the frame, which make the drum easier to hold. The Bodhran is place on one knee with the head facing out, and the player uses one hand to hold the back of the skin and aid in tuning and volume. The drum is played with the free hand using either the fingers or a "tipper", which is commonly made of wood.
