1. In your opinion, the 2008 election that concluded on Tuesday is most similar to which election in history, and why?
In my opinion, the election of Barack Obama on Tuesday, 2008 was most similar to the election of James Polk in 1844. This is because Polk was a “dark horse,” meaning that he did not express his views on certain policies. This is similar to Obama’s campaign, because Obama has not said much of what he wants to do as president.
2. Imperialism: a good or bad thing?
Imperialism is definitely a good thing. As one of the most powerful nations in the world, we should influence smaller countries for the better.
3. Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please.
I don’t agree with many of the goals of the progressive movement. Many of them sound good on paper, but in reality will just lead to higher taxes. For example giving aid to farmers and protecting labor unions’ rights.
4. Please explain the cartoon in the Minnesota Tribune, having the caption at top, "WHAT WILL HE DO!" and the caption at the bottom, "The eyes of the world are upon him." Include your description of the point of view of the cartoonist.
In this cartoon, President McKinley is deciding whether or not to throw the Filipino boy over the edge of a cliff. There is a sign pointing down the cliff that says, “To Spain.” This represents the decision that President McKinley had to make regarding what to do with the Philipines after taking control of them. The whole world was watching to see whether or not he would give the Philipines to Spain. The view of the cartoonist is that giving the Filipinos to Spain would be like sending them over a cliff.
