The National Institute of Standards and Technology, often abbreviated NIST, is a United States government-funded scientific research agency. NIST is part of the Department of Commerce, and has branches located in Colorado and Maryland.

Its mission is:

Promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
