United States District Courts

The United States District Courts are courts which try both criminal and civil actions and admiralty cases. They are separate from the United States Bankruptcy Courts.^[1]

They sit in each of the country's 94 judicial districts, including at least one district in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Some populous states have as many as four federal judicial districts. A district may be divided into divisions by either statute or local rule, in which case the court will sit in each division in the district.
