Allopathic Medicine

Allopathic medicine consists of treatment that relies on remedies that cause effects different from the underlying disease, such as using medication to alleviate symptoms of the condition.

Taking an aspirin to stop a headache is an example of allopathic medicine. Most "mainstream" medicine is considered to be "allopathic" or "palliative" (lessening the effects of disease rather than curing it), while alternative medical approaches are "homeopathic" or "osteopathic".

The "M.D." degree constitutes training in allopathic medicine.
