Faith-Based Initiative

Faith-based initiative is a term for the government encouraging churches and other religious organizations to participate in government-funded programs.^[1] It is based on the conservative opinion that less government is better than more.^[2]

When President George W. Bush first popularized the term, it referred to ensuring that faith-based organizations could obtain government funding while still being able to talk about religion, despite the alleged separation of church and state. Barack Obama has nominally continued the program, giving it the mission "to enable community and faith-based organizations to partner with the government... to achieve the goals.. put forward by President Obama."^[1] The program is currently administered by the United States Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
