Middle Tennessee State University is a four-year public university located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and is a member of Tennessee's State Board of Regents. MTSU offers in many fields, awarding Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees, and Post-Master's, and Postbachelor's certificates.

History[edit]

Founded in 1911, MTSU was the result of a 1909 decision by the Tennessee legislature awarding a state-funded college to each of Tennessee's distinct regions, in addition to a fourth in Nashville for African-American students:

Originally known for having taught the fields of education and nursing, Middle Tennessee Normal School expanded its curriculum over the years; by 1943 it had become a state college. Additional subjects plus an expansion of the campus gained it university status by 1965. Currently, MTSU is second to the University of Tennessee in size of student population; however it is the largest university in the state in the actual number of undergraduate students.

Majors[edit]

Athletics[edit]

MTSU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, competing on NCAA division level 1. Football is played at divisional level 1-A, and is sometimes played in a nationally televised spotlight. The school's athletic mascot is a blue, winged horse named "Lightning", adopted in 1998.
