American History Homework Two[edit]

1. a. Taxation without representation.

b. British Burdens such as the The Quartering Act and The Proclamation Act

c. Religious reasons

Good examples of causes.

2. "No taxation without representation" became a slogan during the American Revolution, because taxation without representation was the main problem that the colonies had with England. No one really knows who started it.

Good, but see model answers for who started it!

3. On Thursday December 19 1773, “The Sons of Liberty” disguised as Indians, climbed onto three ships containing loads of tea that had just arrived to be sold in the colonies (the Dartmouth, the Beaver and the Eleanour) and dumped 40 tons of tea into the water as a protest to the tax on tea.

Superb.

4. I would say that I blamed the general public for being so superstitious, and the girls who claimed to be witches and then accused other innocent people.

Well said.

5. True. Massachusetts had much more conflict than other colonies with more tolerance.

But Massachusetts did not tolerate religious freedom. (Minus 1).

6. 6. There is some debate about weather Meriwether Lewis was murdered. No one can ever really know, but I believe that he probably committed suicide.

Need to explain the reason for your position better. (Minus 1).
7.
Join or Die cartoon.jpg

The Join or Die cartoon was first published (and created) by Benjamin Franklin on May 9 1754 in the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin used this cryptic cartoon to signify that the colonies needed to unite or else they would fail. The reason that it is shown as a snake cut in pieces I that in that era, there was a superstition that if a snake was cut into pieces, it would come back to life if the pieces were joined by sunset.

Good, but unite against whom? See model answers. (Minus 1).

Honors[edit]

H1. I think that it is cool how small the colonies were.

Interesting!

H2. Explain how Britain taxed the colonies, and whether you think it was right for Britain to do so.

I think that it was wrong of Britain to tax the colonies because, it was the right of English citizens that they could not be taxed without representation in parliament. The colonies did NOT have representatives in parliament.

Superb.

H3. George Washington was great in many ways. I believe that two of the most important are: A. He set the standard for all presidents who would follow in history. B. He refused power for himself in order to do what was best for his country.

Excellent.
