A suzerain is a state or sovereign exercising some degree of power over a dependent state. Typically, the suzerain controls the dependent state's international affairs but does not interfere in the dependent state's domestic matters. The word can be used as a noun or as an adjective; an example of the latter is "a suzerain power." Suzerainty is either the condition of being a suzerain or the relationship between a suzerain and its dependent state or states.
