Raleigh is the capital city of North Carolina, named for Sir Walter Raleigh. Together with Durham and Chapel Hill, Raleigh is part of an area commonly known as the Research Triangle (the name taken after a business park originally developed in the 1950's as a means of diversifying the area's economy). It is the second largest city in North Carolina after Charlotte and the home of North Carolina State University.

Professional sports in Raleigh[edit]

The NHL's Carolina Hurricanes moved to Raleigh from Hartford, Connecticut in 1997. They play at the RBC Center, formerly the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. In 2006, the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup over the Edmonton Oilers.
