Democratic Underground (often abbreviated "DU") is a far-left website with a large discussion forum (which is primarily what is referred to when people mention the website) founded by David Allen (aka "Skinner")[1] on January 20, 2001, the day of U.S. President George W. Bush's inauguration. Democratic Underground has been described as "an online gathering place for people who hate the Bush administration."[2] Democratic Underground favors far-left opinions and often deletes posts and ban members that do not strictly adhere to them. This policy targets conservatives, obviously, but also moderate Democrats. As of May 2008, Democratic Underground claims over 120,000 member registrations,[3] but this number includes accounts that have never been used, multiple accounts belonging to individual users, accounts that have been long inactive and accounts which have been permanently banned. It is unclear exactly how many accounts are actually active and it is unlikely Democratic Underground's administration will ever divulge that information, but amateur attempts to discover how many have resulted in estimates between 4,000 and 5,500 accounts.[4]
Congressman John Conyers, Jr., credited Democratic Underground and other left-wing websites for helping keep the "Downing Street memo" controversy alive in 2005.[5]
