Unincorporated Area

An unincorporated area is an area that is not within the municipal limits of any city, town, or village. In states with township governments, the local government of an unincorporated area is that of the township in which the area is located. In states without township government, the local government of an unincorporated area is that of the county in which the area is located. Some unincorporated areas, such as Arlington, Virginia, can have large populations and high population densities.
