Wittenberg is a town in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.

About 45,000 people live in the officially named Lutherstadt Wittenberg: Martin Luther taught theology at the town's university since 1508. He is said to have nailed his 95 theses against the selling of indulgences at the door of the All Saints' church - the Schlosskirche (castle church) - marking the beginning of the Protestant Reformation on October 31, 1517.
