Newcastle was founded in 1892 by the merger of Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End. The team currently plays at St James' Park in Newcastle upon Tyne. Their club colors are black and white stripes with black shorts. Newcastle United are nicknamed 'the Magpies', or, more simply, 'Toon' (the local pronunciation of 'town'); its fans are the 'Toon Army'. Newcastle is the largest city in England with only one football club.

Newcastle were successful in the 1950s and then declined until the 1990s when they challenged Manchester United for the Premier League, blowing a 12-point lead in 1996. They were relegated in 2009 and came straight back up.

The club became champions in the Football League Championship in 2017.
