John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent (Florence, Italy, 1856 - London, UK, 1925) was an American painter, a successful portrait painter. Sargent studied in Italy and Germany, and then in Paris under Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. ^[1]

From his Parisian period Madame X (or Madame Pierre Gautreau) is his most famous work. This painting created a scandal at the 1884 Salon at Paris, and Sargent moved permanently to London. From 1907, he painted only murals and landscapes.
