Super Sentai

Super Sentai is a genre of Japanese superhero tokusatsu television programs. As opposed to shows such as Kamen Rider, which have only around 1-2 riders per series, Super Sentai usually has 3-5 members on a team. Starting with Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, Sentai teams have a Sixth Ranger. Usually, the Sixth Ranger will appear a third of the way through the series. The first two shows, Himitsu Sentai Goranger and J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai were not considered part of the Super Sentai canon until 1995. The term "Super" Sentai refers to the team having a giant robot. This trend began in 1979 with Battle Fever J, and has been a staple in the franchise ever since. From 1979 until 1982, Marvel was involved in producing Super Sentai. It was during this time that Stan Lee expressed interest in bringing Sentai over to the west. A dubbed episode of the 1981 series, Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan was shown to networks, but was passed over. In 1986, Haim Saban made a pilot using footage from the 1984 series Choudenshi Bioman, and again it was turned down. In 1987, Kagaku Sentai Dynaman was dubbed in English, and aired on the USA Network, simply titled Dynaman. The show was a parody. In 1993, a proper adaptation was made when Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger became to first Sentai series to be adapted into Power Rangers.
