A famine is a prolonged period of widespread starvation.
The most recent episode in western Europe was the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s.
Communist countries have had the largest famines. Millions of people were starved to death by Stalin in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (see Holodomor) and in mainland China. (see Starvation under Mao).
