West Virginia University was ranked a third tier school in US News's 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[1]

Its sports teams are members of the Big 12 Conference (the only current conference member in the Eastern Time Zone). A tradition after every win is the (illegal, but the law is rarely enforced) symbolic burning of a couch.[2]
