Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, currently part of France. The capital is Ajaccio.
It was conquered by the Romans in 237 BC - it has had a checquered history of occupation, finding itself variously under Vandal, Byzantine, Arab and Genoese control, finally being sold to France in 1768.
In World War II, Corsica was the first French territory to be liberated by the Allies, in October 1943.
By far its most famous native was Napoleon.
Napoleon was exiled here from 1815 until 1821
