Terbium(III) nitrate is an inorganic chemical compound, a salt of terbium and nitric acid, with the formula Tb(NO
3)
3. The hexahydrate crystallizes as triclinic colorless crystals with the formula [Tb(NO
3)
3(H
2O)
4] · 2H2O.[1] It can be used to synthesize materials with green emission.[2]
Terbium(III) nitrate can be prepared by dissolving terbium(III,IV) oxide in a mixture of aqueous HNO
3 and H
2O
2 solution.[3]
Terbium(III) nitrate can be obtained by reacting terbium(III) oxide with nitric acid and crystallizing then drying the crystals with 45~55% sulfuric acid to obtain the hexahydrate.[4]
It reacts with NH
4HCO
3 to produce Tb
2(CO
3)
3 along with its basic carbonate.[5] It forms Tb(NO
3)2−
5 in CH
3CN with excess nitrate anions.[6]
